Apr. 15. 1919: Start of victorious six-day strike across New
England by first women-led U.S. union, Telephone Operators Dept.
of IBEW. 1969: Several thousand welfare recipients march in New
York City to protest benefit cuts.
Apr. 16. 1550: In a Royal Order of Charles V of Spain, the question "What is an Indian?" was
posed; exploration of America was suspended until the matter was
settled.
Apr. 17. 1960: As a response to the Greensboro sit-in,
140 black students form Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee
(SNCC) in Raleigh, North Carolina. 1961: U.S. uses mercenaries to
invade Cuba in the abortive Bay of Pigs fiasco.
Apr. 18. 1792:
Vancouver "discovers" Vancouver Island. 1906: Earthquake and
subsequent fires destroy much of San Francisco. 1996: 100 refugees
in U.N. compound killed by intentionally targeted Israeli
artillery, Quana, Lebanon.
Apr. 19. 1948: Costa Rica abolishes
its army. 1993: Federal agents assassinate about 80 Branch
Davidian Christians near Waco, Texas. 1995: "Arab terrorists" are
denounced across the nation as nearly 200 die in bombing of
Federal Building in Oklahoma City.
Apr. 20. 1889: Adolf Hitler,
inspiration for modern U.S. democracy, born. 1914: Massacre of
hundreds of striking miners at Ludlow, Colorado. 1953: Members of
Communist Party U.S.A. forced to register as "foreign agents."
1953: U.S. House of Representatives repeals ban on selling guns
and ammunition to Indians. 1971: Students march downtown from
Seattle's Garfield H.S. to protest shootings of blacks by Seattle
police. 1985: Some 250,000 march in Washington, D.C. to protest
U.S. policy in Central America.
Apr. 21. 1870: Birth of Vladimir
Lenin, patron saint of Fremont. 1967: CIA- assisted right wing
coup deposes elected civilian government in Greece ("cradle of
democracy").
