May 27. 1958: Ernest Green becomes first African-American to graduate from
Little Rock Central H.S., Arkansas. 1967: Australia gives citizenship to
aborigines.
May 28. 1830: Pres. Andrew Jackson's recommendation to move all Indians
west of the Mississippi River--a relocaiton plan later used as a model by
South Africa's apartheid leaders--becomes law. 1871: Paris Commune crushed
by French soldiers. 1946: General strike paralyzes Rochester, NY. 1982: Seven women fast for ten days in Springfield, IL in support of the
ratification of the Equal Rights Amendment by the Illinois state
legislature.
May 29. 1792: Spanish fort established at Neah Bay, the first European
settlement in Wash. state. It was abandoned after four months. 1979: An
all-straight jury convicts former San Francisco city Supervisor Dan White
of the lightest charge possible in the assassination of S.F. Mayor George
Moscone and Supervisor (and gay rights leader) Harvey Milk. White's defense
argued that he was depressed because of overconsumption of junk food.
Thousands marched on city hall after the verdict, provoking a police riot.
1986: Christic Institute files lawsuit charging U.S. complicity in Contra
assassination bombing at La Penca, Nicaragua, and CIA role in smuggling
cocaine into U.S. Mainstream media laughs at the allegations, and federal
judges force Christic out of business as a result. Turns out (surprise!)
Christic was right.
May 30. 1741: 13 black men are burned at the state, and 17 black men, two
white men, and two white women are hanged, for their roles in planning a
slave revolt in New York City.
May 31. 1937: Police open fire on striking steelworkers in South Chicago,
killing ten and wounding over 160.
June 1. 1964: U.S. Supreme Court strikes down a Wash. state law requiring
loyalty oaths for state employees. 1985: Unemployed in Vancouver, B.C.
demand free bus service. 1992: U.N. Earth Summit begins in Rio de Janeiro,
Brazil. U.S. gov't obstructs passage of most proposed agreements.
June 2. 1863: Harriet Tubman frees 750 slaves in raid. 1924: U.S. Congress
agrees to give citizenship to some Native Americans.
