Wild and Wonderful Resources

by Have other recommendations? Let us know, and we'll run them in a future issue of ETS!

American Newspeak is on vacation this week, so we offer in its place, our list of Wild and Wonderful Resources you might not know about, because they're not found in every mini-mart in the country. We're also not including any of the literally thousands of (often excellent) organization and party-affiliated publications put out around the country. Check out some of the ones below; they're all great for countering heavily biased mainstream news sources.

Anderson Valley Advertiser. Not only the best newspaper in the country, but probably the best publication period. If you can only read one thing a week, this ought to be it. $40/year. 12451 Anderson Valley Way, Boonville, CA 95415.

The Baffler. They take one topic per issue, and obliterate it. Very informative, very entertaining. $16/4 issues. P.O. Box 378293, Chicago, IL 60637.

BankCheck Quarterly. Read about the latest depredations carried out by the World Bank and International Monetary Fund (IMF). $25/4 issues. 1847 Berkeley Way, Berkeley, CA 94703.

Counterpunch. Incredible muckraking from Alexander Cockburn and Ken Silverstein. $40/26 issues. P.O. Box 18675, Washington, DC 20036.

Dollars and Sense. "What's left in economics." $22.95/6 issues. One Summer Street, Somerville, MA 02143.

Eat the State! Our weekly munch. Burp! $29/1 yr (50 issues). P.O. Box 85541, Seattle, WA 98145.

Extra! Exposing the various lies of the corporate media. $19/6 issues + updates. FAIR/Extra! subscription service, P.O. Box 170, Congers, NY 10920-9930.

From the Hebrew Press. Dr. Israel Shahak, a concentration camp survivor, and Israel's leading dissident, provides these very interesting translations, laced with his own incisive comments. The Hebrew press features a much wider range of o pinion concerning the occupation of Palestine than does the U.S. media. VERY highly recommended. $30/12 issues. Middle East Data Center, Box 337, Woodbridge, VA 22194-0337.

In These Times. Good to often fabulous biweekly news magazine. $36.95/26 issues. Institute for Public Affairs, 2040 N. Milwaukee, Chicago, IL 60647.

Left Business Observer. Fantastic little newsletter decoding the emanations from Wall Street. The publisher, Doug Henwood, has a new book that came out in June, titled, of course, "Wall Street." $22/12 issues. 250 W. 85th St., New York, NY 10024-3217.

Mexico NewsPak. Current articles culled from seemingly every newspaper in the hemisphere. $42/26 issues. Documentation Exchange, P.O. Box 2327, Austin, TX 78768.

Multinational Monitor. Great reportage of the goings on of those evil multinationals (our stomachs are rumbling--who should we eat next?). Founded by Ralph Nader. $25/10 issues. P.O. Box 19405, Washington, D.C. 20036.

NACLA Report on the Americas. Documents the effects of U.S. imperialism on Latin America $27/6 issues. 475 Riverside Drive, Suite 454, New York, NY 10115.

Third World Economics. "The third world's own economics magazine." Sometimes repetitive, but still quite informative. The most fun is seeing how afraid of GATT (and free market capitalism generally) the industrialized world really is. $75/26 issues. Subscriptions and Marketing, Third World Network, 228 Macalister Road, 10400 Penang, Malaysia.

Washington Free Press. Kind of irregular, but when it does come out, it's about as good as it gets. $12/6 issues. 1463 E. Republican St. #178, Seattle, WA 98112.

For Your Listening Pleasure:

Alternative Radio. David Barsamian has been producing a weekly syndicated radio show for years now, and he sells most of his interviews on cassette. P.O. Box 551, Boulder, CO 80306.

Radio Free Maine. Tapes, tapes and more tapes. It's always good to have one of them playing in the background, whatever you're doing (especially if you're frying the state for dinner). P.O. Box 2705, Augusta, ME 04338.
