Apr. 14. 1937: Bruderhof, a collectivist traditional Christian
peace church, raided by Gestapo. Frankfurt, Germany. 1986: U.S.
bombs Tripoli and Benghazi, Libya, assassinating the daughter of
Libyan leader Col. Qaddafi.
Apr. 15. 1919: Start of victorious six-day strike across New
England by first women-led U.S. union, Telephone Operators Dept. of
IBEW. 1969: Several thousand welfare recipients march in New York
City to protest benefit cuts. 1974: Kidnapped heiress Patricia
Hearst is filmed participating in a bank robbery in Sacramento,
Calif.
Apr. 17. 1954: Pres. Eisenhower issues memo threatening uses of
atomic bomb against Red China. 1961: U.S. uses mercenaries to
invade Cuba in abortive Bay of Pigs fiasco. 1986: Jesse Jackson,
Maxine Waters, and others form the Rainbow Coalition, a progressive
public policy think tank within the Democratic Party.
Apr. 18. 1775: Paul Revere goes joyriding. 1792: Vancouver
"discovers" Vancouver Island, and renames it. 1906: Earthquake and
subsequent fires destroy much of San Francisco. 1970: 4,000 march
in Seattle for peace in SE Asia, escorted by Seattle police
officers with daffodils tied to their night sticks.
Apr. 19. 1943: Jews in Warsaw begin revolt against Nazi tyranny.
1948: Costa Rica abolishes its army. 1993: Federal agents attack
Branch Davidian compound near Waco, Texas, shooting or incinerating
over 80 women, men, and children. 1995: Bombing of Federal Bldg in
Oklahoma City kills nearly 200, setting off hunt for "Arab
terrorists" and eventually resulting in new laws suspending due
process for non-U.S. citizens.
Apr. 20. 1889: Adolph Hitler, influential world leader, born. 1914: Massacre of hundreds of striking miners at Ludlow, Colo. 1953: Members of Communist Party U.S.A. forced to register as "foreign
agents." 1971: Students march downtown from Seattle's Garfield H.S.
to protest shooting of blacks by Seattle police.
