Rock On!

Dear Eat the State!, The Free Seattle Radio Collective would like to thank Eat the State! and Christine Peterson for the informative and helpful article, "On the Air," in the latest issue. We have been striving for decent coverage in local and regional alternative news outlets, and Eat the State! has done the best job to date of helping us achieve our goal of reaching a diverse and broad community of listeners. Thank you! --DJ Rogue, Free Seattle Radio 87.9

The Reference Room I

Hello ETS!, I am writing an article for a paper ("Hermes" at Wesleyan University) on campaigns to limit the powers of corporations. I learned about "Democracy Unlimited in Humboldt County" from an article in your paper, and heard somewhere else of a similar campaign starting up in Seattle. Have you heard anything about this? I would appreciate any info, if you have regarding it, or for that matter, any other leads you can think of. I know you are busy, and I congratulate you on your work. I am a displaced Seattleite on the East Coast, and I enjoy the weekly news (via e-mail). Thanks,

The Reference Room II

HELL-O State Munchers!

I've heard from several others that major newspapers and news radio just outside USA borders have better reporting environmental and political for this continent and the whole whirl than the Seattle big media. Can you recommend any papers or news services available free online from Canada, New Zealand, Australia, or Britain, or English-speaking from anywhere?

Second, PLEASE extend your calendar of events to at Least two days longer, preferably three or four, and longer for major important ones! When my computer works, I can check Jean Buskin's list, but before I got this PC a few weeks ago I missed several events because on average, even with active searching, I'd find a copy on Capitol Hill about Friday or Sat. I'm sure there are others (including mail subscribers) who miss out the same way.

Also, if you have an address, e-mail or snail, for National Public Radio (for a schedule), I'd LOVE same.

Looking forward to the Earth First! presentation later today. Hmmm...it's the same time as the lotto. Well, I guess it's time to win it. I wonder if the IRS allows tax deduction for gifts to such radicals?

THANK alla YOU!!!

Bob Wells, via e-mail

M.T. replies: I take it you didn't win, Bob. Too bad.

Your letter brings up a topic that I want to address before it gets too much out of hand: WE ARE NOT THE LIBRARY! We are not a clearinghouse. We don't keep vast e-mail, phone, or mailing lists of all the activist groups in the state, the nation, or the world. We don't have vast stacks of publications from foreign nations; we don't read everything that's printed in the English language every day of the week. We're just a couple of geeks with computers and Internet access. Like you.

By the way, while I was reading your letter, I noticed that you have e-mail access through an Internet service provider (AOL) that allows you access to the World Wide Web. Why don't you use their search engine to find NPR's website?

We Don't Come Here Either

Just a quick note of thanks and appreciation for the excellent work and writing your team does. I always look for ETS! when in Seattle, which this time of the year is not at all, so am quite pleased to find you on the net and will subscribe via the cyber town we live in. I salute your commitment to truth and justice, peace and logic!

A Serious Addiction

Dear ETS!,

I've been reading your newsletter (or is that "shamelessly biased political journal?") for a few months now, and you guys rock. It's great to find a local source of left-wing, radical activism. I have a suggestion for an upcoming article, if y'all don't think it's too inane: coffee. I've long heard vague things about the evils of coffee: destruction of environment, exploitation of workers. Seattle has a reputation as a "coffee city," and the coffee phenomenon seems to have spread globally in recent years. It would be cool if you guys would blow the lid off this, and perhaps point out some sources of non- or less-evil coffee; I'd like to not give the stuff up, if I can help it.

Rock on,

Emily Mahan, via e-mail

Did They Arrest Henry Ford, Too?

Your recent article by Maria Tomchick "Forgotten History" failed to mention that of the total internees in WW II a majority were actually Europeans not Japanese. While the majority were not American citizens, some were; which to a point differentiates them from Japanese-Americans. My grandfather was a German civilian architect, living in Boston since the mid '20s and was married to an American when he was arrested by the FBI in late December, 1941. He was placed in a series of camps and detention centers until the end of the war. No trial, no due process. My mother's family went broke during this time.

The main entry point for the American archipelago was Ellis Island where at least at the time of my last visit contains no mention of its WWII use.

This is a politically incorrect story for a number of reasons.

1. They were German. 2. The government does not wish to acknowledge this took place in case there are claims for restitution.

Red, White, and Blue Americans

ETS!,

Picture this: A highly placed executive has a series of sexual encounters with one of the office clerks. Or: A general has a dalliance with a lieutenant. Would the executive not be forced out by the board for fear of lawsuit? Wouldn't the general face court-martial? Why is Clinton being treated any differently?

The fact that these encounters were ostensibly uncoerced is immaterial. He was in a position of power and authority. If I were to have this type of interaction with one of my patients or students I would lose my license and be thrown off the faculty. His encounters with Ms. Lewinsky are an abuse of his position. By the nature of his position and authority they were coercive acts.

It is a sad testament to the state of ignorance of much of the female populace of this country that Ms. Lewinsky fails to see the degrading and obscene way that she was used. Bill should have just taken a porn rag to jerk off with instead of using an ignorant young woman as a tool for masturbation.

I do not mean to say Ms. Lewinsky carries no culpability. She as an adult person is responsible for her actions. But in these situations the superior must always take the moral initiative and bear the brunt of responsibility. It is shameful that the president fails to have the moral character needed for his office.

We should never accept the myth that a man is unable to control his urges. And Ms. Lewinsky should not be vilified for her mistake. For her part, maybe she should apologize. Not to the American people, but to Mrs. Clinton. She is old enough to know that what she was doing was wrong.

Clinton for all his lip service is not a supporter of women but rather he is reinforcing the position that women are things to be used for one's gratification. It would be sad if the fallout of this situation were the further entrenchment of moralistic absolutism and sexual repression. For these bring down all women.

Monica is not Eve. Ultimately we all suffer the consequences of a patriarchy that instills in its men the sense that they can use women as they please and avoid consequences because it's a guy thing to succumb to the temptation of womankind.

Clinton should do the honorable thing and resign. If he were a truly great leader he would acknowledge that he failed and take the consequences of his action. He will reap what he sows. Whatever lessons he needed to learn in this life he has yet to endure. He needs to turn away from the American Judaeo-Christian myth of power and privilege and seek a new paradigm of equality and responsibility.

We red white and blue American men and women must also accept our culpability in supporting the system that encourages such behavior. Saying that the economy is more important or that the liberal agenda is more important is morally reprehensible. We of the liberal left should not fall trap to the fallacy that in the scheme of things what he did, although wrong, is unimportant. The right will grab hold of this and bludgeon us with it. In degrading Monica Lewinsky Bill Clinton degraded us all.

More Hanky-Panky

ETS!,

Remember how the Air Force completely dishonored and then discharged the female pilot (Capt. Flynn) for dating an enlisted person? He had informed the Captain that he was going through a divorce which, turned out not to be true. Well, we have a situation here at the Alpena Combat Readiness Training here in Alpena, Michigan. The military personnel assigned to this base are all Active Duty Military. They are known as Active Guard Reserve (AGR) and they are assigned to the state of Michigan under USC Title 32.

These men are subject to the same Uniform code Of Military Justice as their Active duty counterparts serving under U.S. Title 10. The state military commander is Gov. Engler. There is a Medical Readiness Training Center located at the Alpena base. Students are rotated through the school from every Air National Guard unit in the United States and, in some cases they come here from overseas bases. The classes are in one or two week increments depending on the mission requirements.

Regulations dictate that there will be no personal relationships, between the students and the instructors, especially of Officer and Enlisted. Well, the school Commander Major Dempsey decided that this rule did not apply to him. Although he is married, and he was an officer, he began an intimate relationship with one of the enlisted female students. To make it even better he managed to get her full time employment under his command. His entire staff knew of this action including the Base Commander. One of his staff filed a congressional complaint because he too had applied for the position but he was denied because of an alleged DWI on his record. Meanwhile, the wife of Major Dempsey has found out about his adventures. She has changed all the locks on their house and she has filed for a divorce. This is just one of the many escapades that occur in the "Militia of Gov. John Engler"... These men, known as "Officers and Gentlemen," answer to no one. They seem to be over and above the law. Unless some authority is exercised things like this will continue to happen.

Thanks for listening.

--W.C. Lewis, MSG, Ret, Alpena MI
