FROM THE KITCHEN
by Editors
Starting with this issue, we'd like to welcome a new regular
editor: Troy Skeels. Troy has written articles for us in the past on
Mexican politics, Latin American issues, legal issues, the Microsoft
anti-trust case, and other topics. We're happy to have him on board.
November 30 is the one-year anniversary of the Seattle protests
against the World Trade Organization. ETS! will be producing a special
16-page issue compiled of articles we've printed over the past year on the
WTO and the protest movement, combined with new articles examining the
impact of N30 on the WTO, the development of the anti-globalization
movement since N30, and other delicious bits and pieces. We'll be offering
it for sale at $5 per copy (subscribers will need to order their copies
separately from their regular subscriptions). It will be available the
second week of November, and we'll be selling it at various N30
anniversary events around town. But if you want to get your copy as soon
as possible, order now and we'll send it to you as soon as it's printed.
Speaking of November 30th, that's the deadline for our special,
ETS! reader-participation contest. We even have a prize for the winner: a
copy of the newest Tom Tomorrow book of cartoons. It will be awarded to
the author of the best letter we receive between now and then. By best
letter, we mean one that addresses something that's appeared in ETS! or
addresses a topic of concern for our readers. Be cranky, be critical, be
original, be funny, be creative ... but be brief. We want to be able to
print it, of course, and our space for letters is limited--please keep it
around 200-400 words. Send your contribution to our address (listed in the
tiny print) or to our e-mail account (ets@scn.org). Just make sure your
name (or pseudonym) and address are indicated in a prominent place on your
letter.
Our volunteer staff here at ETS! is always changing, as folks move
in and out of town, as people change jobs, as babies are born, as people
graduate from college, etc. A couple of very important positions are
unfilled right now. One is the distribution coordinator. It requires a
person willing to keep in touch with all of our distributors, keep track
of where the papers are being placed, and answer calls from folks who want
to volunteer to distribute papers. It's not difficult to do, but it's a
very important position, for obvious reasons. We also need distributors
who are willing to take papers around to established routes in the
Greenlake/Phinney Ridge area and Capitol Hill. Also, if you're a person
who has always wondered why ETS! isn't at your favorite book store, cafe,
bar, or coffee house, maybe you should call us up and offer to take a few
papers around your neighborhood. Distribution is one of the most enjoyable
jobs with ETS!: many businesses love to have free papers around to draw in
customers and keep them lingering.
Also, in this issue of ETS! we've added our near future publishing
schedule. This will make it easier for our readers, writers, volunteer
distributors, and folks who want to get inserts into the paper to know
when the next few issues will be printed. We meet at the Independent Media
Center at 1415 3rd Avenue in downtown Seattle to count and assemble
bundles of papers, stuff flyers, and shoot the breeze. Drop by every other
Tuesday, as noted, to volunteer or just meet the crew!
