From The Kitchen
by Geov Parrish
On this, our fifth anniversary, we've got a few little, miscellaneous notes
to go with the big THANK-YOUs to all of our volunteers today and over the
years (see box, page --).
On the fundraising front: along with long-time peace activist, former
political prisoner, and current Portland agitator Tom Hastings, I had the
pleasure (and sometimes frustration) of editing and writing the 2002 War
Resisters League Peace Calendar, on the theme of 52 Nonviolent Victories
(i.e., times when we've struggled and won). (See also the ad on page
--). For those who've never seen it, the WRL calendar comes out each year on
one or another theme, and if you want, at the end of the year you can tear
the date pages out and have yourself a dandy little book of prose, poetry,
artwork, or whatever that year's theme is.
Because I helped create them, WRL has been kind enough to let ETS! have a
bunch of these cool calendars at a deep discount--meaning that you could
buy
the calendars from WRL and support them, or you could buy it from us and
support both them and Eat the State! Naturally, I hope you'll order
from us--$12 each, or 4/$44, from P.O. Box 85541, Seattle WA 98145--and get
plenty for your friends, neighbors, co-workers, and relatives as holiday
gifts, too.
Meanwhile, also on the fundraising front, several folks have already done
it,
and you should, too: Send part or all of your tax refund to ETS!! When you
paid those taxes, you thought the money was going to the state...what
better
final resting place for it than folks who want to devour the state (Bush
included) instead? (And let's face it, we not only spend the money more
wisely, but we have less and need it more.) If you like, we'll even send a
special thank-you card to the White House upon receipt of your
donation...that's ETS!, PO Box 85541, Seattle WA 98145.
One of the reasons we're pushing those annoying fund requests is evident by
this issue: the number of additional articles, features, and other Cool
Stuff
that we can fit in if we're able to either print more pages, publish more
often, or both. The main thing that keeps us from doing it, in this, our
sixth year, with dozens of regular volunteers helping put ETS! out, is our
cash flow. As in, we rarely have any. Your donation (tax-deductible upon
prior arrangement) can help. 'Nuff said.
