From The Kitchen
Last week, we published what I believe to be the best issue in ETS!'s
history--a special double issue, on the occasion of our fifth anniversary,
with five pages of historical material and 11 pages of our usual fine news
and commentary. (We've known for a long time that we have enough material
to print 11 pages, or more, every issue, but we haven't had the money.)
The day that issue came out, it was rendered largely moot by the horrific
events in New York. For that reason--and because, as a consequence, the
country, at this writing (on Sunday), is hurtling toward war--we are
publishing this emergency four-page issue with commentary to try to put
into perspective the enormous events now happening. Normal features like
Nature & Politics, Focus on the Corporation, and other columns will return
next week. Since Reclaim Our History and Activist Calendar covered a full
two-week period last week, they are not repeated here; the calendar
listings cover only events related to peace efforts.
Our plan is to go back to our eight-page, bi-weekly schedule, beginning
with our regularly scheduled issue next week (Sept. 26). However,
especially if war should begin, we'd like very much to return to weekly
publication while it's underway.
While the advent of the Internet has made finding alternative opinions on
enormous, breaking stories far easier than it was during, say, the Gulf
War, it's only seen by people looking for it. The advantage of a free print
publication is that it reaches folks who aren't already concerned about our
government's response--and reaching the general public is the peace
movement's only chance to create a political movement that can keep our
government from making terrible mistakes.
At present, we don't have the money to do that. Two additional eight-page
issues a month would cost us about $1,200 a month, for as long as it took.
Two extra four-page issues (like this one) would run about $800. If you'd
like to see this happen, please send your donations today to Eat the
State!, P.O. Box 85541, Seattle WA 98145. If we don't have enough extra
money to print weekly, we'll instead spend all donations received to print
and distributing extra copies of our bi-weekly editions.
Thank you for your support and help during this tragic and critically
important time. --The Editors
