Where To Find Geov
by Geov Parrish
People keep reminding me that most folks probably aren't aware of the vast
Geovex empire that ETS! has spawned, or where to find it. So, here's a
review.
I didn't have any experience in regular (let alone paid) political writing
when I started ETS! (several folks helped, but initially I did all the
writing) in 1996. But the response was fast and astonishing. The same week,
I got an offer to be interviewed for my political opinions each week on
KCMU 90.3 (now KEXP), and you can still hear Eat the Airwaves!, over the
air or on the web at www.kexp.org, every Saturday from 8:30-9 AM Pacific
time--part of a longer weekend morning public affairs block, "Mind Over
Matters," that runs from 6-9 AM Saturday and Sunday.
I've been writing a weekly opinion column and various reportage pieces for
the Seattle Weekly since 1998. As assorted national outlets have come
calling, my writing sidelight has turned into a full time job. I'm now
writing five national columns a week (!), for the phone/credit card company
Working Assets, which features me and Laura Flanders (formerly of FAIR and
Pacifica) among a bunch of big-name leftie commentators on their web site,
www.workingforchange.com.
I've been a contributing editor at In These Times magazine (also at
www.inthesetimes.com) since mid-2001. And the fine folks at AlterNet
(www.alternet.org) feature me on average at least once a week, with either
reprinted or commissioned material; they've also just come out with a great
new book, "After 9/11: Solutions for a Saner World" (description below).
Alternet also syndicates me to weekly papers and web sites around the
country, and more recently I've also started syndication to daily papers.
For those interested, the geov.org web site is still awaiting development,
but there are three relevant e-mail lists: daily notices and links for the
workingforchange.com column; a list for the Seattle Weekly column; and a
weekly digest of all my published stuff for that week. If you're interested
in any of them, e-mail me at gparrish@seattleweekly.com and I'll add you to
whichever list(s).
