7 PM. Friday Night at The Meaningful Movies: Smothered--The Censorship Struggles of The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour," (93 minutes, Maureen Muldaur, 2002). The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour was the Daily Show of the '60s. Outspoken about drugs, youth culture, racism, censorship, right-wing policies of the Nixon White and the Vietnam War, they soon found themselves battling their network and the FCC for the right to say what they wanted on their own show. Lifelong AIDS Alliance holds an important fundraiser and community builder to honor those whose lives have been touched by HIV/AIDS. The AIDS Walk is crucial to raising awareness of HIV/AIDS in our community, and the rise of HIV/AIDS among women, especially women of color (HIV/AIDS is the leading killer of African American women ages 25-34). 6-10 PM. Artist Reception and opening of Exhibit "Voices of Dissent." Featured artist is Jeff Matthews. He exhibits a black and white photographic retrospective look at Seattle anti-war protests of the second US Iraq war. The series includes a set of (20) 20x30 serendipitous double exposures made on film with the first images taken of industrial complexes by gallery owner Larry Murphy and the second exposures taken by Jeff Matthews around Westlake Center the day the Iraq war started. 2 PM. Sleepwalking Apocalypse: 9/11, participatory theatre. Reclaim Remembrance of the Day, an outdoor theater performance and memorial procession. The memory of 9/11 has been stolen and abused. Sleepwalking Apocalypse: 9/11 will use masks, music, spoken word, and visual images to recover our right to remember the living, the dead, and the still dying. The performance will include a memorial Procession of Faces in which the audience can participate. 7 PM. Post 9/11: The Tension Between Security and Civil Rights. Four years and one day after the 9/11 attack on the World Trade Center, the Anti-Defamation League of the Pacific Northwest will host a panel discussion on the USA Patriot Act and its renewal. The panel will consider this question: are we more secure as a result of the passage of the patriot act and at what cost to our civil liberties? Panelists include ACLU Board Member Jesse Wing, an attorney at Seattle's McDonald, Hogue & Bayless; American Muslims of Puget Sound President Jeff Siddiqui; former FBI Special Agent in Charge of the Seattle Office of the FBI, Charles Mandigo; a possible representative of the US Department of Justice; and Rob Jacobs, Executive Director of the Pacific Northwest Region of the Anti-Defamation League. 7 PM. Friday Night at The Meaningful Movies: The Trials of Henry Kissinger (80 min., Eugene Jarecki, 2002). Documentary archival footage from the Nixon era paints a portrait of Kissinger, the former US Secretary of State and a recipient of the Nobel Peace Prize. The film argues that he was a power-hungry warmonger, and was responsible for massive military cover-ups in Vietnam, Cambodia, and East Timor in the 1960s, as well as the assassination of a Chilean leader in 1970.
