May 25. 1895: Gay playwright Oscar Wilde convicted of "acts of gross indecency," England. 1948: Garry Davis, an ex-US GI, renounces US citizenship to become Citizen of the World. Davis continues to promote "world citizenship" for over 50 years; 400,000 have, at one time or another, joined the movement.
May 26. 1868: Pres. Andrew Johnson avoids impeachment by one vote. 1972: First "Watergate break-in" attempt by agents of Dick "I am not a Crook" Nixon's Committee to Re-elect the President (CREEP) fails.
May 27. 1647: Execution of Achsah Young, first witch known to be executed in America. Massachusetts, of course. 1923: Nobel Peace Prize winner, corporate consultant, and unrepetant war criminal Henry Kissinger born, Germany.
May 28. 1830: Pres. Andrew Jackson's recommendation to move all Indians west of Mississippi River--a relocation plan later used as a model by South Africa's apartheid leaders--becomes law. 1961: Amnesty International founded, Britain.
May 29. 1736: Patrick Henry, American revolutionary patriot, is born. 1986: Christic Institute files lawsuit charging US complicity in Contra assassination bombing at La Penca, Nicaragua, and CIA role in smuggling cocaine into US to fund Contra wars.
May 30. 1431: French military leader Joan of Arc burned at the stake. 1741: Thirteen black men are burned at the stake, and 17 black men, two white men and two white women are hanged, for their roles in planning a slave revolt in New York City.
May 31. 1779: General Washington orders Iroquois suppressed. A scorched-earth policy in which dozens of villages were burned follows. 2001: Two notoriously thuggish Central District patrol officers for the Seattle Police Department shoot and kill an unarmed black man, Aaron Roberts, in suspicious circumstances. Weeks of protests follow.
June 1. 1963: US Supreme Court bans formal prayers and religious exercises from public schools. 1964: US Supreme Court strikes down a Washington state law requiring loyalty oaths for state employees.
June 2. 1924: US Supreme Court, for the second time in six years, declares a child labor law unconstitutional. The third time would be the charm. 1992: Cease fire in Angolan civil war.
June 3. 1041: Lady Godiva rides naked through Coventry to save people from exorbitant tax. 1985: Appeal court in England rules war tax resistance unlawful.
June 4. 1864: The legendarily alcoholic Gen. Ulysses S. Grant's military tactics during his first month in command of the Union Armies result in the deaths of 60,000 Union soldiers. He is later rewarded with the Presidency. 1985: US Supreme Court strikes down Alabama's "moment of silence" law.
June 5. 8239 B.C.: Presumed origin of Mayan Era of Creation. 1961: US Supreme Court orders US Communist Party to register with the Justice Dept. 1967: Boxer Muhammed Ali is sentenced to five years in prison for refusing the military draft.
June 6. 1889: Great Fire in Seattle destroys 25 downtown blocks. 1944: D-Day; 150,000 Allied troops invade Europe at Normandy, France.
June 7. 570: Birth of Muhammed in Mecca. 1981: Israel bombs suspected Iraqi nuclear installation.
