Eat These Shorts!
Antiwar activists marked the fourth anniversary of the Iraq War with over 1,000 events nationwide and several locally between Saturday May 17 and Monday May 19. Three local rallies and marches on Sunday and Monday turned out a total of 4,000-5,000 people. Just when large turnouts could actually be effective in pressuring tepid Democrats into doing the right thing, turnouts remain about a tenth of what they were before the war began. This is despite the fact that public opposition to the war is greater than ever before. With street heat at a low simmer, it's not surprising that the Democratic Congress would be satisfied with feeble half-measures like were passed that week. Why are antiwar protests only bringing out the hardcore faithful, while the large majority who actually agree with us stay home? If you have ideas about what it would take to turn out the kinds of numbers that Congress could not ignore, write us a letter at editorial@eatthestate.org. --Lansing Scott
