Nagasaki Day.Anniversary of day in 1945 when a 2nd nuclear weapon was dropped on the city of Nagasaki, Japan, last use of a nuclear weapon in war.
7-9 PM. The Cultural Revolution and Reflections On Contemporary Chinese Art. This is in conjunction with the opening of "Shu: Reinventing Books in Contemporary Chinese Art" exhibition. Sent to cultivate the hinterland during the Cultural Revolution (1966-76), Professor Gu Xiong provides a personal account of his experiences during this turbulent and traumatic period of modern Chinese history. He will discuss the Cultural Revolution from personal, historical and political perspectives, and how that experience continues to affect Chinese contemporary artists up to now. 9-11:30 AM. How to Get News/ Media Coverage; Connecting With Communities Of Color. Find out the basics of getting exposure through the media. The event will feature a panel of media representatives. Confirmed panelists include: Naomi Ishisaka, Editor in Chief, Colors NW Magazine; Monica Foster, writer, the Skanner newspaper; and Lee Carter, founder/host of the Afra Genesis Radio Network and former television news reporter. Moderated by Kevin P. Henry, KKNW-AM, KBCS-FM radio host and journalist. The panel will focus on how nonprofits, community organizations, faith-based groups and agencies can get news coverage for their programs and events. Topics covered include: what makes a strong news story, connecting with minority media, working with reporters and the basics of establishing a relationship with the print, radio and television media. 7 PM. Wier Harman, Town Hall's executive director, directs a staged reading of Atomic Farmgirl by C. Denby Swanson.Adapted from the memoir of the same name by Teri Hein, the play is set on the farm Hein grew up on in Eastern Washington, in the shadow of the Hanford nuclear plant. It looks at the land over time, tracing its beginnings as Cayuse and Yakama territory and contemplates its future and the legacy of the nuclear industry in this country. Actors include E. Ray Anderson and Leslie Law. Teri Hein is the Executive Director of 826 Seattle, a non-profit writing center for students ages 8-16. This performance is the culmination of play-development workshops held during the first week in August at the Icicle Creek Theatre Festival in Leavenworth. Through August 24. The City of Bellevue and KBCS 91.3 FM are sponsoring a Free Radio Camp for Youth. Youth will finish the camp with one of two finished products: a live formatted recording or edited feature story, with the chance to air it on KBCS 91.3 FM. Workshops will cover radio journalism, writing for radio, recording, voicing and interviewing. There is also the opportunity to continue to produce radio for KBCS throughout the year.
